Why ‘Great Snakes!’?

It’s the second most frequently asked question I’m faced with (next to what does a copywriter do?).

The answer is simple—and it has nothing to do with actual snakes.

When launching my copywriting business, I wanted a name that wasn’t just John Smith Copywriter or Joe Bloggs the Writer. Instead, I wanted something different that sparked curiosity and grabbed attention from the get-go.

And with ‘Great Snakes!’, I found my answer.

An exclamation along the lines of ‘holy cow’, the relatively unknown ‘great snakes’ first came to my attention in the fantastic Tintin comics by Belgian artist Hergé.

For those not in the know, I’m a big Tintin fan—and this is reflected by not only my ultimate choice of business name but also the fact that the logo is my dog Ripley drawn in the same ligne claire style Hergé drew Tintin and his dog Snowy in.

It’s not only a Tintin thing though. There are even earlier uses of ‘great snakes’ too, and almost always as a euphemistic ‘oh my gosh’ exclamation.

It makes you sit up and take notice, and it’s this response I aim to recreate with words. After all, I’m about copywriting that stands out.

To that end, I weaponise the English language and weave together words that are memorable, target an audience, tell a story and tell it well.
